The Asian Circle Summer Party
In June, The Asian Circle hosted its first summer party at the Bangalore Express, in the heart of the City of London. It was a wonderful event and an opportunity to meet old and new friends and Asian Circle members while raising funds to support victims of domestic violence in the tribal Adivasi communities, in North East India.
As well as delicious traditional Indian cuisine, canapes, a live DJ set and henna artists, our guests had the chance to enjoy listening to our guest speakers —Sarah Ireland, Head of Organisation Effectiveness at Oxfam, and political and social activist Henna Rai. Some of our guests included Judge Sujata Sharma, who was recently awarded the Outstanding Woman in Construction Law prize; Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry, Director and founder of the London Asian Film Festival; Sadhia Hussain, an activist for the protection of Bengali women’s rights, and Taryn Khanam, founder of the BritBangla association.
All profits from the evening went towards supporting The Asian Circle’s project with Oxfam India. We are working with the tribal Adivasi communities in North East India to challenge the social acceptance of sexual and domestic violence against women by setting up support centres in police stations to provide shelter, legal advice and counselling and launching a state-wide campaign to raise awareness of and change attitudes towards violence against women. The money raised at the event will also enable Oxfam to build a support centre in Chhattisgarh.
