For Sama Screening: Save the Date
Nothing is more important to us than our collective health and so we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network fundraising party and screening of For Sama on Thursday 19th March.
This event was to launch the MCJN x Action for Sama Filmmaker Fund that will provide one-off grants for female documentary and news filmmakers working in emergency and conflict zones in the Middle East.
The success of For Sama has shown the appetite for, and power of, stories told by female journalists, and we hope this fund will support more heroes working on the frontlines of some of the world’s most deadly conflicts.
If you would like to support the Fund, you can donate here using PayPal or a bank card. Thank you.
The Circle and the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network will be screening For Sama on March 19th 2020. We would encourage you to save the date for this event as it is sure to be a special one, with a reception and panel discussion following the film.
For Sama is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.
Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
The film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts.
