Global Feminism: City of Joy
City of Joy was shown as part of The Circle’s new series of films inspired by the Annie Lennox campaign to promote Global Feminism, encouraging everyone to further understand the inequality around the world for the
most disempowered women and girls.
City of Joy shows a ray of hope in a country where sexual violence is a weapon of war. Turning Pain Into Power is the theme this amazing project, a sanctuary of healing and transformation for women who have been traumatised by the most horrendous violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Annie Lennox urges everyone to watch this inspirational film demonstrating that we can effect changes to enhance and empower the lives of women across the globe.
The screening was followed by a Q&A with a panel who shared their experience of visiting the Panzi Hospital in DRC, founded by 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and City of Joy Consultant Dr, Denis Mukwege.
We would like to thank everyone who came along to see this incredible film. We would also like to thank our panel for providing further insight into the situation in the DRC and to Eve Ensler for her message to the audience.
The film can be incredibly difficult to watch, the sheer scale of violence a struggle to comprehend. Yet, the energy and determination of the women featured is so incredibly inspiring. The likes of Jane and her positivity and committment to helping others who have gone through a similar experience is a highlight of the film.
