About us

Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin was killed in Syria in February 2012. She died reporting the injustices of conflict, determined to uncover truth from one of the most dangerous places on earth. Marie believed passionately in the rights of women and their power to create change wherever they live.

Marie took every opportunity to offer advice and mentoring to young female journalists just starting out – while being a constant friend and sounding-board to fellow, experienced reporters.

Not long before her death, Marie was introduced to The Circle, so her friends, Lyse Doucet, Lindsey Hilsum, and Jane Wellesley, felt that the best way to remember Marie was to set up The Marie Colvin Circle to continue her practical support for women producing quality independent journalism.

What we have achieved

Every year, around the anniversary of Marie’s death, at The Marie Colvin Circle we organise a party to celebrate her life and work and to keep our supporters up to date on our project –The Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network. In previous years, the event has been attended by some top journalists and foreign correspondents, including Jon Snow, Lyse Doucet and Lindsey Hilsum
